Community Playground Project's design
We are currently working with playground suppliers to build a design that will best suit our space and needs. Below are the proposed plans for two units: Junior Unit and Senior Unit
"Time for Change"
Killarney School Community Playground Project
A playground is a place we all remember from our childhood. It is a special place, filled with laughter, joy and fun. It is an important part of school. All of us remember sitting in class, counting the minutes to recess. On the playground, friendships blossom and problem solving abounds. Physical activity promotes healthy bodies and minds. These are life skills, and it is integral that these are established at a young age. The playground is a fundamental part of school life.
These fundamentals should always be part of all children's lives. Which is why the Killarney Parent Advisory Council has made the Killarney School Community Playground Project our focus project. We believe the "Time for Change" is now. Unfortunately, schools are not mandated to fund school playgrounds. Our school community is left to cover the high costs of updating the playgrounds through fundraising and donations. We need to raise a great deal of money in order to update the old equipment. This is a challenging quest, but our children are worth it. Our school is worth it. Our community is worth it.
As stated this is a Community Playground Project. It may be located at Killarney School but it's use is not limited to school hours only. The playground is frequently utilized after hours by children of all ages, including siblings of participants in after school community activities (soccer, baseball, music lessons, etc.) The playground should also be a source of activity for the community's influx of summer residents along with hundreds of additional year-round visitors who come to the Killarney area. However, at this point in time, it is not. This is what we plan to change. We need a community space that is designed for all children, all year long.
Our project is in the preliminary planning stages. The focus is on components that need to be improved, replaced or added to the existing playground. We are also working to include additional, much needed, elements such as benches, shaded areas with tables, as well as incorporating the "back to nature" aspect... gathering areas with logs and rocks that offer outdoor classroom opportunities and a play hill with slides and rock climbing features that can perhaps serve as a toboggan hill in the winter. We may not be able to implement every idea in the initial construction but our goal is to include them in the overall plan and build in future phases.
Fundraising is ongoing for this major project (see our fundraising page for more details)
KPAC appreciates all donations - please contact us for more information on how you can help.

The current equipment
The majority of this playground was originally built 30+ years ago and have been experiencing second-generation play for quite some time now.
